The Power of Light
What is it about light? I was watching an open air opera recently, marveling at how light projected on the stage created endless illusions of constantly shifting worlds borne out of the blanc canvas of the stage. Projected into our “real” lives, light creates similar illusions in our inner worlds, playing with the spectrum of our emotions. The beauty and power of light has fascinated artists across all mediums and centuries.
Recently, I came across the work Shibasish Saha, a self-taught photographer from Kolkata, India. He first started photographing when he was ten years old, using his uncle’s Kodak camera. Reigniting this hobby in a college photography club, he experimented with photographing random scenes, learning the rules of light by trial and error, when he took an image of a boy playing in the streets (above) - a photograph which first got him noticed as a photographer.
Leveraging his job in IT to acquire high quality gear, he continues his passion for travel, street and aerial photography, shooting on a trial and error basis using both traditional and drone cameras. “Gain as much knowledge as you can about your camera”, he says. “Apart from theory-based knowledge, the only way to improve your skills is by continually shooting and reviewing before shooting again.”
Shibasish Saha’s feel for light and colour is incredible, as is his innate sense for composition. I was thrilled to discover his work.
