LEVAN LAGIDZE (Georgian, b. 1958)
“One of Georgia’s greatest artists.” This is London
“A distinct artistic coup … Utterly ravishing.” Galleries Magazine
“A Living Legend.” Dante Magazine
Georgia is an ancient land of inspiration, diversity, and artistic mastery. It is the home of Levan Lagidze, one of Georgia’s greatest living artists.
Lagidze's works are collected by leading museums, including Russia’s iconic Tretyakov Gallery and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art; Georgia’s National Picture Gallery, America’s Zimmerli Art Museum, and other major public and private collections worldwide. In October 2018 the Georgian Museum of Fine Arts in Tbilisi opened a new building with a hall dedicated to his work.
I don’t want to surprise or to shock you, I only want to share with you
Lagidze looks deep beneath the surface to share experiences in harmony and gratitude, saying that “a relationship with painting is a participation in this infinite happy game.”
Listening to Bach, I see the infinite
Inspired by the spectacular landscapes and cityscapes of Georgia, Lagidze weaves a tapestry of life experiences. Every inch of his canvases is a separate universe. The rhythm of Lagidze's gem-like colours invites you to pause, savouring the moment of discovery of hidden layers and textures. This spacing and rhythm is what links his compositions to Bach.
“Listening to Bach I see the infinite … Each measure, rhythm, accent and pause is so precise that his music is always new and unexpected. This is the magic of universal composition. The music you can see or the painting you can listen to…”
This is the first exhibition of Lagidze’s artworks in the United States.
