Horizon

Levan Lagidze, Horizon, 2019, oil on canvas, 105 x 130cm, private collection

Curating an exhibition by Georgia’s iconic Levan Lagidze is a process filled with pleasure and anticipation. As in Forest Gump’s box of chocolates, “you never know what you are going to get” - but in this case, I know I am going to like it.

As we are setting up today, this post is in Levan’s own poetic words, describing why he titles a number of his works “Horizon”.

Quick note: I recommend reading this on a laptop or desktop because I purposefully left the images full-size. This may obliterate your screen but it allows a close-up of details which are so important in Lagidze’s work. You can click on an image to see a compact version that displays the entire painting at once.

Horizon

The horizon is a line where the earth meets the sky
Where thirst meets tranquility
Where the daring of the earth meets the indulgence of the sky
This is a very fine line
And having seen it, you hold onto it your entire life
Like a tightly wound spring within yourself, in your soul
