Wu Jun (Chinese, b.1959) explores the feeling of rootlessness and disorientation brought by change. He compares the effect of China’s rapidly changing way of life to the migration of birds, conveying the feeling of weightlessness and roaming, and the need to adapt to survive. He writes,“Every winter Kunming welcomes seagulls flying from the north. Such migration for survival allows us to feel the significance of living in today’s environment…. In modern cities people’s internal world is often floating, roaming … rapid change fosters both beautiful dreams and terrible pitfalls.”

Wu Jun's City Migrator series captures the process of dealing with change in midstream. The bodies are floating, rootless, unsure of which direction to take. Some are trapped in confined spaces, others are questioning the direction of their travel, yet others are surrounded by cultural artifacts of the past amidst the industrial skyline of the present.
